10th Anniversary Memorial Exhibition for Kaji Aso: "Magnificent Dance"
麻生花児没10年記念展～華麗な舞～

What a magnificent tribute to the late Kaji Aso, commemorating the 10th anniversary of his untimely death!
The main theme of this exhibition is the “magnificent dance” of butterflies in painting, which could symbolize Kaji Aso’s adventurous journey to various parts of the world, from the Volga to the Nile and the Mississippi River, mostly for canoe expeditions, where he observed the beautiful nature with birds and insects, especially gorgeous butterflies, which inspired his artistic mind, clearly shown in this exhibition.
The venue, Tokyo American Club, is so appropriate, as Kaji Aso made home in Boston and Tokyo, where he left his artistic legacy at the Kaji Aso Studio in Boston and its Tokyo Station.
Actually, each of the paintings exhibited seems to be telling its background story, which might well be shown up in other forms of his art works, such as poems, music and calligraphy. One example may be the poem “Autumn Butterfly” in his Proteus:
Butterfly flying out faintly
Lights on my shoulder.
No moment of staying
Slide, fall
Stops all breathing.
The sun from the side
Gives her exquisite funeral.
The sun goes through her body.
We all miss Kaji Aso, a “Renaissance” man, with so many accomplishments in various ways, still inspiring so many people all over the world today. The Kaji Aso Tokyo Station should be commended for this timely and memorable exhibition for him.

早死にされた麻生花児氏の没後10周年を記念する展覧会は、実に華麗なものであった。
この展覧会のメインテーマは「華麗なる舞」というもので、蝶が舞う姿を描いた絵画が中心で、それはあたかも世界中を旅行された麻生氏の生涯を象徴しているようであった。実際にボルガ川、ナイル川、ミシシッピ川などでのカヌー探検の際に、周りの自然や鳥や虫などを観察し、特に華麗な蝶を見て大いにその芸術魂が刺激されたことが、この展覧会の作品に表れている。
東京アメリカンクラブという会場も適切な選択であった。なぜなら、麻生氏はボストンと東京の両方をホームタウンとして活躍し、彼の芸術的遺産はボストンの麻生花児スタジオとその東京ステーションに残されたからである。
実際に、展示された絵画のそれぞれが、その背景にあるストーリーを語っているように見え、それらはおそらく詩や歌や習字といった他の方法で麻生氏が表現していると思われる。その一つの例は、麻生花児詩集「Proteus」に収録された詩「Autumn Butterfly」である。
